Don't Be Fooled

Don't Be Fooled

Grandiose claims abound when it comes to Biblical archaeology. Noah’s Ark Found! Garden of Eden Located! Tower of Babel Unearthed! Over the years, many individuals have boldly made such claims to the press. However, upon examination there is no evidence to back up such grand assertions. Blurry photographs, dubious artifacts, and a lack of corroborating evidence always seem to accompany these declarations.

Now while the person might mean well, shoddy work and speculative research does not help further the cause of Biblical archaeology. Quite the opposite is true.  Many believers might hear these claims and embrace them without serious examination. These rumors are then spread from church to church with many people taking the claims as settled fact. In the end, these speculative finds are then used to try and prove to non-believers that the Bible is true.  Of course, upon examination the claim falls apart and the believer is left embarrassed.  Sadly, this happens time and time again.

We must make sure that we are not fooled. While archaeology can be a powerful tool that corroborates scripture’s accuracy, it is important to verify the claims we hear.  An interesting case study can be found in the work of Ron Wyatt.  Although possessing no degree in archaeology or any related field of study, as a believer he desired to seek out the past.  In multiple trips to the middle east, he claimed to have found Noah’s Ark, Goliath’s sword, the Ark of the Covenant, and the site of the Red Sea crossing.  These are just a few of his supposed finds, but excuses were always made as to why he had no evidence to offer.  Still, many people were quick to take his word and spread it. Some of his false claims are still being passed around today as true.

Biblical archaeology has to be held to a higher standard.  There are many exciting and documented finds that shine light on Biblical times and attest to the truth of scripture.  There is no need to make things up. If the Lord allows for a grand discovery to be made, it will be accompanied with physical evidence. We rejoice in such discoveries!  But let us stay vigilant and guarded. Let us not be fooled. For while true discoveries aid in apologetics, false finds hinder it.
